Dev log 2 - Pitching a Game

During our class time, we were tasked with pitching our initial game ideas to the class. My concept was a game called Carbon: A Post Climate Conundrum RPG, which is an immersive sim building upon the coal = ability usage mechanic from my prior development log.  Carbon was influenced by both the original Fallout and Deus Ex: games that react well to player freedom and provide multitudes of options to support player progression.

My feedback was in regards to the scope of the project and the demands such a game would put on a small team. I was well aware of this when conceptualizing the project, but still decided to pitch Carbon to help get my ideas written down paper, a game concept I've had in the back of my head since 2019. Our team has decided to pivot towards a different pitch from a different team member, which is an outcome I'm very okay with. If nothing else, pitching Carbon gave me an opportunity to write down the key hooks, features and narrative that I haven't had an opportunity to explore on my own. Meaning that now I have a game pitch that, even if I can't explore it now, I'd be more then happy to try developing it in the future.

Using this opportunity to develop a previous idea of yours is very clever, and even if your team doesn't use it for this project, I'm excited to see if come to fruition if you do decide to continue developing it on your own time. Even if the scope was too large for this years project, it may be a very good game to develop with a large team if you ever decide to work on it again. Your inspiration from other games helped get the overall vibe of your game across better in my opinion!

Hi Ethan!

I absolutely loved Carbon and your pitch was exceptionally done. The thematic ties to creating a eco-friendly world was well thought out and tied into the coal mechanic thoroughly. If the Carbon can be given the chance to become a full game in the future, I would love to play.

Hey Ethan,

Your pitch was certainly very visually impressive, and I think it captured the elements of climate crisis very succinctly. I think the scope might have been a little large but given that we would have multiple ideas to pick from for the final product of each of our teams I think that it was a good move to pitch something that was obviously such a strong concept in your head.

I look forward to seeing what you and your team do with the project you've settled on.

Hey Ethan,

I really loved your pitch and I can tell the idea had a lot of room for expansion. Other than the potential issues with scope it really was a sound idea and I hope you get to pursue it in the future but for this class and project timeline I can definitely see how it'd probably be a huge undertaking to get all of it done and polished by april. I can definitely tell this was an idea you've been sitting on for a while, it seems very well thought out and put together. I hope you get to flesh out the idea more!
