Dev Log 1 - Conducting Research for Game Design
For our last project, I had chosen to research Climate Change for the purpose of designing a new game. I think it's an often talked about issue in current political discussions, but still something I hadn't fully grasped the gravity of. Through my research, I got to look into weather statistics, how regions are affected in different ways and what kinds of solutions are often pushed onto people to help solve the problem.
The game I intended to frame around climate change was based around the player having a resource dependency that negatively impacted the environment. The player requires "Coal" to power their abilities in game, but is also actively working against a large corporation burning coal for profit. I think it would be interesting for the player, as they progress, to lose access to their sum of coal available to use, making it seem like their actions in the plot (against the corporation) are having active positive effects on the setting, but actively making abilities less convenient to use.
